Lagos
Welcome to Lagos, Portugal’s former window on the world
and secret capital of the Algarve, with its historical
small town atmosphere.
The glorious history of Lagos was always linked to the
ocean. It was from here that Henry the Navigator
Caravels departed on their voyages of discovery. The
small harbour of Lagos became a focal point of
international shipping routes and a crossing point of
many civilizations. To date Lagos has kept this
cosmopolitan atmosphere and copes well with the demands
of the modern world without neglecting its heritage. The
combination of narrow streets with whitewashed 18th
century houses together with the more modern parts of
the town give it a very special feel.
Lagos is a great place for all kinds of water sports and
nautical activities. The golden rocks of the Costa
D’Oiro are breathtaking and one of the most photographed
locations in Portugal.
Lagos is also a place of rich cultural interest with
excellent local cuisine, a variety of leisure
activities, traditional arts and crafts and much more….
In the old town you will find, not only historical
buildings that are well worth seeing, but also good
shopping opportunities. At night Lagos town centre is
the place for night owls, with cosy cafes and lively
bars you can while away the hours people watching and
taking in the atmosphere of this typical provincial
Portuguese town. |
