Golf in Portugal
In the
Western Algarve golfers will find challenging
courses in beautiful natural settings surrounded
by the majestic Atlantic Ocean. This unique
setting combined with the sea air and scent from
the costal pines is certainly an experience
golfers will never forget.
There are currently 70 golf courses in Portugal.
Of the 32 located in the Algarve, 11 are in the
western region. Parque da Floresta, Palmares and
Boavista are just several of the most famous
courses in the western area.
On the coast or inland, there is plenty of
choice in this region. However, all courses have
something in common: they are all beautifully
designed and maintained to the highest of
standards. This will guarantee your visit to be
a pleasurable experience.
The magic of nature, quality and variety of golf
courses as well as a friendly welcome make the
Algarve, without a doubt, the best golf
destination in Europe. This has been recognised
by many important, international entities within
the world of golf.
For the first time in February 2008 GOLFmagazin
presented golf Awards in nine categories.
Readers and on-line users of www.golfmagazin.de
voted the Algarve as the best golf region in
Europe. Quality and choice of golf course as
well as variety, climate and natural settings
were the key winning factors. The Algarve won
over and above other popular destinations, such
as Mallorca (Spain) and Ireland’s west coast.
Christopher Stilwell, vice-president of The
Algarve Tourism Association, who received the
award said “We are very proud of this
distinction and we are pleased that golfers are
happy with the natural and technical
characteristics of our golf courses.”
In 2007 the Algarve was voted “Best World Golf
Destination” by the German magazine Rheingolf
and in 2006 voted “Established Golf Destination
of the Year”. Also year 2000 saw the Algarve win
the title of “Best World Golf Destination 2006”
from the “International Association of Golf Tour
Operators – IAGTO“. This award was the result of
a survey carried out amongst 240 golf tour
operators from 38 countries, based on criteria
such as customer satisfaction, quality of the
courses and accommodation facilities,
professional conduct of suppliers, value for
money and the support of local tourist industry.
These awards show the enormous prestige of
Algarve golf courses. This region is certainly
one of the most desirable golf destinations in
the world.
